This stripe likely belonged to a Lance Corporal in the British army and would have been worn on the sleeves of his uniform. Lance Corporal was the lowest non-commissioned officer (NCO) rank and was represented by a single chevron. As stripes often wore out along with the shirt they were sewn onto by the gruelling tropical conditions of the camps, this stripe might have been taken off beforehand and hidden. When stripes wore out, ranks were sometimes represented by handmade metal bracelets with rank badges attached. Sometimes the bracelets had inscriptions for further identification.
