This is a rare surviving example of furniture from the early 20th century that is found and made in Malaya or Singapore. Such screens would have been used as a space separator in the residence of a wealthy household, office or commercial establishment such as a doctor’s or dental clinic. Due to its durability and resistance to insects, solid teak was the choice material for furniture in the tropics. Frosted glass panel insets are also used to allow light to flow through whilst ensuring a level of privacy.
