The Toraja were fond of trade textiles, many of which were regarded by them as precious heirlooms. From the beginning of trade with India and Europe, the Toraja would import machine-made textiles for use in ritual and everyday life. This jacket was possibly made from Dutch exported cloth with its stylised floral print, which was then embellished with local ornaments such as glass or crystal fastened in place with colourful threads.
