This painting was first displayed by the artist May Oon at “Over/ Time” an exhibition organised by The Private Museum in 2015. It was created as part of a collection of primarily charcoal and oil works depicting the hardships of Chinese and Indian coolies in Singapore in the 1800s. The painting is inspired by archival photography available in the public domain, as a reminder to Singapore’s public of their migrant roots.
