Henry W. Cave left England for Ceylon in 1872 and established a bookstore in Colombo, which sold books and eventually musical instruments to planters. He also set up a printing press and became a commercial photographer and publisher. His photographs illustrate a series of travelogues he wrote, of which this volume is one of them. His landscape photographs are valuable documents of Sri Lanka’s natural habitat, industries and railway system, which was a crucial element in the colonial enterprise, aiding both administration and economic development.
