This is a painting of 'The Traveller's Joy Palm Singapore'. It is a hand-coloured wood engraving from a sketch by Major General R.C.W. Reveley Mitford. This drawing appears in Mitford's book 'Orient and Occident' (1888), a travelogue detailing his journey from Liverpool to Lahore, and many countries on the way. He stopped in Singapore, and describes the Traveller's Joy Palm as one which provides water when its stem is tapped, refreshing the parched traveller.
