This is 'The Casuarina Tree', a collection of short stories written by Somerset Maugham. This copy is the first edition published in London in 1926. The stories are based on Maugham's travels in the Federated Malay States and Southeast Asia. The collection raised controversy in the expatriate British community in the Federated Malay States, as they felt it painted them in an unflattering manner. Maugham stayed in the Raffles Hotel whilst visiting Singapore. The present Raffles Hotel has a suite named after Somerset Maugham.
