The Tang Shipwreck was acquired through the generous donation of the Estate of Khoo Teck Puat.

During the Tang dynasty, the demand for ceramics was stimulated by the new fashion for tea drinking. Several bowls from the Tang shipwreck sport inscriptions as the main decoration but no two designs are the same. The inscription on this piece simply states its function, chazhanzi 荼盏子 i.e. "tea bowl".
