The Tang Shipwreck was acquired through the generous donation of the Estate of Khoo Teck Puat.
The wreck contained many storage jars. Some may have held food and water for the crew, but the majority contained goods for trade. Some with larger openings were packed with ceramic bowls from the Changsha kilns. The bowls were nested within each other in a coiled arrangment and straw was probably used to cushion them. This packing method and the silt of the seabed protected most of the cargo from damage. Many of the jars (including this example) bear inscriptions, which may have been merchant's marks, near the mouth of the vessel.
