This oil painting on canvas depicts a sailor at the shore in Goa, dressed with a piece of white cloth bordered in red around his waist and the similar type of cloth tied around his head. He stands with his right arm pointing to the entry of the Mandovi river, where a few vessels are depicted. On the other shore, at the base of the hill is the façade of the Reis Magos Church. At the top of the hill is the Reis Magos fortress with their two walls that descend until the river. There is a silhouette of another hill, and on the top shows the Fort Aguada. Under the figure is inscribed in Portuguese MARINHEIRO, meaning sailor, and under the first fortress …DO REIS MAGOS, a village on the Mandovi River, opposite to the capital city of Panjim. It is suggested that the setting of the painting is in Bardez where the Reis Magos Church and the Fortress of Aguada are located and still exist today. After Goa was taken in by Alfonso de Albuquerque in 1510, there were several attempts to build a complex defense structure to protect the region of Goa. Both fortress of Reis Magos and Aguada, are among the most interesting military and architectural settlements of this defensive structure. The Reis Magos Church is the most important Franciscan settlement of the region. Its foundation dates back to 1550.
