This black bowl decorated with five dramatic russet-coloured splashes exemplifies the aesthetics of Chinese ceramics of the period. The bold colour and spontaneous execution of the russet-coloured strokes are a delightful contrast against the lustrous black glaze and simple form of the bowl. Black wares were a popular product among the kilns in northern China from the Tang dynasty (618–907) to the 14th century.
