Singapore watercolour artist Winston Oh initially studied medicine as a student in UK between 1960 and 1973. During his time there, he was captivated by the beauty of the English landscape, and started his painting practice in watercolour. He subsequently undertook instruction from two established English watercolourists, John Yardley RI and James Fletcher-Watson RI. As an artist, Oh has a deep and abiding interest in capturing the atmospheric conditions of the landscapes he paints. His works often reveal an Impressionistic sensitivity to light and colour, with a particular focus on the themes of light and shadow. Although currently residing in Singapore, Oh travels widely and has also been based in UK for many years. Hence, the artist is best known for his numerous travelogue works done in watercolour. Oh has also been teaching watercolour painting in the UK for a number of years.Painted in Suffolk in UK, the work "The Thames barge on the Orwell Pinmill, Suffolk" is part of a series of watercolour works done by the artist on the English uropean landscape. Pin Mill is a village along the River Orwell in Suffolk, and a popular destination for boating enthusiasts. In this quiet scene, Oh has captured a scene of the bankside where the boats have been brought ashore. The artist's interest in depicting the atmospheric effects can be seen in his rendition of the sky, and the broad washes of paint to denote the cloudy effects of the weather.
