Hong Zhong An is a Chinese immigrant artist who has been living in Singapore over two decades. Inspired by the tradition of Chinese painting and calligraphy as well as Western modernism, Hong’s artistic exploration belongs to the broad pictorial discourse of modern/contemporary innovation and transformation of Chinese ink painting. This painting produced in 2008 presents the artist’s transformation from his early signature style, which was inspired by Chinese calligraphic characters, to a more subtle construction of visual surface based on layers of ink brush strokes. The recent transformation reflects the artist’s introversive engagement with ink medium and Chinese pictorial tradition.
