Born in 1939, Tay Bak Koi graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in 1960. He held his first solo show in 1964. Fomr the 1960s onwards, he had exhibited widely in Asia, Australia, Europe, the US and the Middle East. Known as a firm advocate of the Nanyang School, he was noted for his idyllic scenes of village life, Singapore River and Chinatown done in semi-abstract style, using geometric angular forms and richly textured colours. He passed away in 2005.This still life painting is a rare early example by Tay. Done with ink and colour on paper, it shows traces of influences of his teachers such as Cheong Soo Pieng and Chen Wen Hsi who were known for their use of Cubist language and striking dark colours in their painting of the 1950s and 1960s.
