The City Day celebrations marked the day that the Town of Singapore was made a City of the British Commonwealth, officiated by the proclamation of a Royal Charter by King George VI. Spirits were high that day as festivities abounded all over the island. That day, more than a thousand policemen were deployed to control the throng of people who had swarmed into the civic district, as well as the massive traffic and pedestrian jams that ensued.
