Black shoulder cloth

This black netted ‘selendang’ (shoulder cloth) with yellow and pink embroidery belonged to former First Lady, Puan Noor Aishah, the wife of Singapore’s first President, Mr. Yusof Ishak. Puan Noor Aishah would buy fabrics from Arab Street or High Street and make her own ‘selendang’ and clothes. She is often depicted in photographs wearing the ‘sarong kebaya’ (an open tunic fastened with brooches worn with a sarong) with a ‘selendang’ draped over her shoulders.
