This jar has red, blue, green and black enamel decoration characteristic of Swatow wares. The central band features quatrefoil panels on a lozenge ground. A band around the shoulder features zoomorphic and medallion motifs. A minor band around the foot has stylised flaming pearls.Such jars are typical of the heavily potted wares associated with the port of Shantou or 'Swatow' in Guangdong province from where they are thought to have been exported. They have now been re-designated as 'Zhangzhou' wares as research has indicated that they were produced at kilns near Zhangzhou in Fujian province. The term 'guan' literally means official ware and refers to porcelain produced by an imperial-run kiln.
