Straits Chinese bowls tend to be shallower with sizes ranging from 10 to 20 cm in diameter. This bowl features bird and floral motifs on a blue-ground. Blue-ground Straits Chinese wares are rare because blue is a substitute for black, the colour of mourning. While such wares have limited uses, it was still regularly used and treasured by some wealthy Peranakan Chinese families.
