The characters on this armband identify the piece as belonging to a 'Red Guard' from the 'Forever Red Combat Headquarters' and a defender of 'Mao Zedong Thought'. Red armbands such as these were worn by individuals who had rallied to Mao’s revolutionary cause during the early years of the Cultural Revolution. There were many factions in the Red Guard movement and many different units emerged as the Revolution progressed.
