This rectangular embroidered panel is created using the knot stitch. This is a technique where the thread is knotted around itself. Thread couching is used to create a raised effect for the decorative motifs, which are considered auspicious in the Chinese culture. These include a vase with pomegranate and other fruit, a Chinese fan, ‘ruyi’ or ‘ju-i’ and a vase with peony flowers. Pomegranates are considered symbols of fertility and peonies symbolise wealth and prosperity. The ‘ju-i’ is a symbol in Chinese Buddhism that symbolises power and good fortune. The workmanship of this piece suggests it was possibly made in the Straits Settlements. Threaded panels like this were used as table covers, panels for picture frames and ornamental hangings among other uses.
