This gold ornament is an example of the double spiral motif, a form that manifested itself early in the history of Island Southeast Asia. The motif appears in jewellery dating back to well before the Common Era. Despite its ancient history, the double spiral continues to appear widely across the archipelago, particularly in tribal societies such as the Batak and Nias.
