This photograph shows a view of Commercial Square, which was renamed Raffles Place in 1858. Despite the official change in name, the area continued to be referred to as Commercial Square for several years. Raffles Place developed into a business district and a concentration of mercantile offices, banking houses and trading companies were established in the area. The Commercial Hotel building can be seen on the right.
