A large number of Chinese women in Singapore in the late 19th century were either sold into prostitution or were employed as ‘amahs’ in European households. Despite their low social position, these amahs were considered fortunate to have escaped prostitution. Many European children ended up being very close to their amahs as they were practically raised by them in the early years of their lives.
