One of the most prominent agency houses in 19th century Singapore, Guthrie and Company was established in 1821 by the young Scotsman Alexander Guthrie as a trading branch of Thomas Talbot Harrington and Company. Initially dealing only with the import of British manufactures, the firm later expanded its activities to include trade in Straits produce as well as the insurance business. By the end of the century, it had made impressive inroads into the Malayan tin and rubber industry. From the 1850s until 1905, the company’s offices and warehouse were located in a two-storey building along the bustling commercial stretch known as Collyer Quay.
