Born in Ha Tay Province, Nguyen Gia Tri (1908-1993) was one of the pioneer students from the first graduating class of Ecole des Beaux Arts de I’Indochine. Recognized by many as the father of Vietnamese lacquer painting, Tri contributed to the medium in terms of his technical advancement. By liberating the medium from its decorative colours of vermillion, yellow and black, he dominated the lacquer painting field in the 1940s, with some of his best works produced in the years 1943 and 1944. In this work, Tri presents his iconic panoramic view of the lush vegetation of Vietnam. Full of nostalgia, the golden tint gives a feeling of grandeur, perhaps hinting of the idyllic days before the war. The synthesis of East and West is evident, with the choice of medium being traditional and the way of representation Western.
