Born in Ha Tinh province, Nguyen Phan Chanh (1892-1984) first graduated from Don Ba Teachers’ Training College in Hue before attending Ecole des Beaux Arts de I’Indochine in 1925. Together with Le Pho and others, Chanh was amongst the first graduating class in 1930. Known for his silk paintings, Chanh exhibited in Paris in 1931 and 1938, and in Vietnam in 1939. Chanh’s paintings usually portray the lives of the rural people. This early work by Chanh, which depicts the idyllic village life, untouched by modernization, is painted in the graceful and elegant style that he is most associated with. Although educated in the Western painting techniques, Chanh chose to present his works in a manner similar to traditional Chinese paintings, often penning poems on the works to complement the composition.
