Born in 1964 in Lophuri, Thailand, Kamin Lertchaiprasert graduated from Silpakorn University in 1987. From 1987 to 1992, save for a period in 1990 when he became a monk, he was based in New York, working and attending art school. He returned to Thailand in 1992. Since 1987, Kamin has held several solo exhibitions in the region, and participated in international exhibitions such as the Second Asia Pacific Triennale (1996). Working in a variety of mediums, Kamin’s art questions the role of art in society. ‘Art’ is an observation by Kamin of the huge gap that exists between people who understand art and those who do not. In the etchings, faces, including one with the likeness of Albert Einstein, sport mocking and shocked expressions. The word ‘ART’ is printed upside down over the faces, perhaps alluding to their lack of understanding about art which in turn shapes their views about art. Kamin who majored in printmaking, created this series of four etchings while in New York.
