The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The construction of the Taj took place from 1632 to 1653. A harmonious blend of Persian, Islamic and Indian architectural styles, the structure is widely considered the finest representation of Mughal architecture. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
