This is a photograph of Chan Shu May with midwifery classmates and teachers at the former Kandang Kerbau Hospital, dated 23 January 1948. Chan is third from left in the back row.Chan Shu May was born in Jiangsu, China in 1920, and subsequently moved to Singapore. She was with the Medical Auxiliary Service (MAS) during World War Two. The MAS provided medical aid during the Japanese bombing of Singapore. She then worked as a midwife from the 1950s to the 1970s before becoming a fulltime housewife.
