This is a photograph of How Tock Lan and her teacher from Yamano Beauty School, holding a course certificate. How Tock Lan studied hairdressing at Yamano Beauty School, Tokyo in 1964 for 3 months. The course was conducted in both English and Japanese and covered haircuts and perms. It was attended by Japanese and international students. They learnt hairdressing through watching demonstrations. The students also practiced on models or on each other.Upon returning to Singapore, she worked at her father How Poh San’s Hong Kong Hair Salon (香港理发院) in Toa Payoh. The hair salon catered to both men and ladies.
