Wee Kong Chai started on his sculpture practice in 1970, after he returned to Singapore from his Paris training. His time in Paris exposed him to a variety of sculptural works, which inspired him to explore this medium to depict local life in Singapore. Wee’s works are made from local materials and wood that he collected from throughout Singapore. This decision emphasizes his connection to his homeland and his commitment to incorporating local elements into his works. This work illustrates Wee’s interest in figuration and human relationships. Long-haired Girl highlights the girl's long hair, accentuated by her downward-bent head, drawing attention to its flowing form. This work, meticulously carved from a single piece of wood, showcase Wee’s exceptional skill and craftsmanship in wood carving.
