The futon typically consists of a padded mattress and quilted bedcover. This futon cover is decorated with tsutsugaki, a method of resist dyeing with rice paste. It features a design of mandarin ducks which symbolise fidelity and conjugal harmony, suggesting that it was made to celebrate a wedding. Such covers were included in a bride’s trousseau.
