Lee Hock Moh (b. 1947) is a renowned second-generation Singaporean ink artist specializing in the traditional flower-and-bird genre and gongbi styles (meticulous brush techniques). This work is a characteristic example of Lee’s recent style on his favourite subject. In the gongbi style, the orchids are depicted with fine and rhythmic lines, followed by multi-layers of ink-and-colour rendering in the traditional method. This work shows new stylistic development as the artist incorporates landscape elements (the plants and rocks at the bottom of the composition) in the xieyi manner (expressive and free-hand brushwork) into the gongbi flower-and-bird painting.
