Donated by the family of the late Mdm Lau Ah Loy
This is a customary wedding certificate for Lau Ah Loy and her husband. The certificate dates to 1954 and contains auspicious motifs that symbolically wish the couple a blissful marriage. The animals and motifs depicted on the certificate are drawn in pairs to symbolise the newlyweds. The certificate also records the ancestral origins of the couple as hailing from Guangdong, and notes their ages. The certificate was signed by a witness, officiant and the couple. While this certificate records the marriage, it was not until the passing of the Women's Charter in 1961 that such marriages were officially and legally recorded by the state.
