Chow Ah Ming came to Singapore from Ipoh, Malaysia, in the 1950s and joined the Teachers’ Training College. At this time, he lived at the Kingsmead Hall student hostel for Malayan trainee teachers run by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Chow’s Christian faith was an important part of his life and he attended the Straits Chinese Methodist Church at Kampong Kapor Road, where his marriage with Soong Nyet Yun was also solemnised in 1961. This is a wedding photograph of the couple taken at New Earth Studio. Soong was from British North Borneo (now Sabah, Malaysia), and had also moved to Singapore around 1954 to enrol at the Teachers’ Training College for a 2-year Certificate of Education Diploma course. Both Chow and Soong went on to teach at primary schools in Singapore, although Chow later specialised in teaching English as a second language.
