Set of moulds (Guo Tai Min An 国泰民安)

The moulds were made by the second-generation owner, Mr Tay Yong Poh, of the local joss stick manufacturer Tay Guan Heng. The characters form a Chinese idiom which denotes a country that is prosperous and its people are at peace. The medallion with characters, which were created from the moulds, would then be applied onto the body of large joss sticks. Over time, Tay added figurines, Chinese characters with auspicious meanings and lucky numbers to the designs of his large joss sticks, which had traditionally featured dragons. Moulds were introduced into the production process as manpower became scarcer in the later years of the business.
