Known as kerosang rantay (kerosang or kerongsang being the Malay word for blouse fastener and rantay meaning chain), this jewel comprises three oval-shaped fasteners linked together with chains. Each fastener is set in gold and rose-cut diamonds (intan) in open (à jour) setting, which allows light to enter from the front and back of the brooch. Such fasteners are worn by women from indigenous, foreign, and mixed-race communities in Southeast Asia to secure the front of a baju panjang or kebaya. This kerosang rantay was worn by Nancy Peh Cheng Neo (1919 – 1994), a Peranakan nyonya who married John Wee Chim Hock. Nancy’s mother, Seet Guan Neo was from Malacca and married Peh Wah Kok of Singapore, who was awarded the M.B.E. on 7 June 1951. Peh Wah Kok’s parents were Mr Peh Kiat Lam (1857 – 11 November 1930) and Mrs Peh Kiat Lam née Wee Huat Neo (1859 – 21 October 1927). Up till the late 1970s, four generations of the family including Nancy Peh Cheng Neo's children lived at “Rose Villa” in Geylang, Singapore.
