Photograph titled 'The Release', belonging to Margaret Slowright Grant, depicting her and her fellow internees on the day they were released from Changi after the Japanese surrender in 1945. Grant is located in the lower left of the photograph, alongside her best friend who was also interned with her, Janet Jeffries.Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Grant started work as a nurse with Edinburgh City Hospital before being posted to Kuala Lumpur in 1940 as part of Queen Alexandra's Nursing Service. She came to Singapore slightly before the Japanese invasion of the island in 1942 and was likely posted to Kandang Kerbau Hospital. Following the British surrender, she was interned with the other nurses in Changi Prison, including her best friend Janet Jeffries. Upon their release, department store owner Tang Choon Keng or CK Tang opened the doors of his store to the prisoners of war, allowing them to have whatever they wished on credit. Grant bought for herself two new dresses.
