“Bird with One Wing” is a compilation of poetry by 1982 Singapore Cultural Medallion for Literature recipient Goh Poh Seng. Goh was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and began writing poetry while studying medicine at University College in Dublin, Ireland in the 1950s. He authored a total of five volumes of poetry including “Bird with One Wing”. His first novel “If We Dream Too Long” won the National Book Development Council of Singapore’s (NBDCS) Fiction Book Award in 1976 and was considered the first English-language Singaporean novel. His works have been translated into various languages including Russian, Tagalog and Japanese.Goh was active in developing Singapore’s post-independence art scene. He chaired the National Theatre Trust from 1967 to 1972 and was Vice-Chairman of the Arts Council from 1967 to 1973. He also founded publishing firm Island Press, the literary journal “Tumasek”, and Centre 65, an initiative to promote the arts in Singapore.
