This sarong is stamped with motifs of poker cards surrounded by bunches of grapes symbolising abundance and luck. Its blue and black base is contrasted with red borders of floral motifs, all of which possibly made with synthetic dyes. It is signed with “Tjoa Toen Giam”.Batik makers created designs that not only responded to shifting tastes of consumers, but also that of fellow batik businesses. Sarong featuring card games such as this, or cherki cards were fun ways of displaying the maker or wearer’s favourite pastimes.
