Alice Choo (1926-2019)’s sewing box contains 6 spools of thread, 10 needle cases, 2 packets of small needles and 3 large needles. She also used containers and small bowls to hold beads when she was working. Like most nyonyas, Choo was taught to bead and embroider at home. Needlework supplies could be purchased from the itinerant haberdasher, the "jarong man", who travelled from house to house hawking his wares, or from specialised shops. Residing in port cities at the confluence of trade routes in Southeast Asia, Peranakans were able to obtain a wide variety of materials coming from near and far.
