Native composed of an unprocessed mulberry bark, beaten to an almost completely flat structure not dissimilar to its manufactured form as paper. Known also as an indigenous species in parts of Southeast Asia, Han pays tribute to the history and conditions of the mulberry. Retaining the material, Native encapsulates Han's sculptural sensibilities outside of her typical materials. Native was produced during her residency at STPI - Creative Workshop & Gallery. Han reinvigorated her creative approach with new material possibilities with STPI’s in-house paper mill, exchanging her signature mediums of stone and marble with paper pulps soft in nature. As with her practice, Han is constantly inspired by the flora and fauna in tropical forests of Southeast Asia. Highlighting our need to deepen our appreciation of nature, her practice often references the ever-changing landscape in the region, the environment, and the ecosystems.
