This razor was used by Mdm W.Y. Low, who worked as a hairdressing apprentice then hairdresser in Singapore from around 1946 to the early 1980s. The razor was produced by the AutoStrop Safety Razor Company, which was founded by Henry J. Gaisman in New York in 1906. The words on the inner cover of the storage box indicate, however, that this razor had been made in England. As its name suggests, the razor would be stropped automatically by a piece of leather inserted into the razor housing. This dispensed with the need and expense for the constant replacement of blades. From 1912, the word "Valet” was used as a trademark to indicate that the razor, strops and blades were genuine products of the company. The AutoStrop razors came with a small box which made it convenient to travel with and for storage at home.
