This is a shrine commissioned by a devotee for the deities worshipped in Lingyun Dian Beichen Gong 凌雲殿北辰宮, a Taoist temple established in the Chinatown neighborhood in 1937. The founders regarded the temple as a branch from the one in Putian, Fujian; over the post-war years, Lingyun Dian Beichen Gong did not only serve as a religion center for the neighborhood, but it also assumed a social function in supporting charity initiatives in the Chinese communities. Such a structure was used to carry the image of a major deity between temples and around the local community during festival processions, which could enable the deity to “tour” the area of his/her influence and to distribute blessings to devotees. The richly decorated shrine includes panels allude to Taoist legends such as the "Eight Immortals crossing the Sea". The shrine could have been carved by artisans in the Fujian province.
