This certificate of competency for typewriting was awarded to Lam Po Chee by the Singapore Institute of Commerce, one of the first business schools in Singapore when it was established in 1947. It offered various classes across different levels for working adults, including bookkeeping, typewriting and shorthand. Typewriting courses were especially popular among women in post-war Singapore as typing skills were essential for secretarial jobs, which were commonly held by women at that time.
