This work draw on past conversations that the artist had with her late mother, Hajah Saerah Haji Taris—cooking and sewing instructions, her views on life and observations from her roles and responsibilities. Deeply personal, the creation of the object began with question: ‘Mama, what you like me to make for you today?’Third Shift is referencing the many roles that Saerah had in her lifetime: a wife, mother, educator and advocate for social needs and charitable causes in the community. The works take the form of three spinning tops bound together that they may balance as one.
