Gift of Ms Lucy Cheong Shew Wai in memory of Mr Cheong Foo Yong

This headpiece was made by the Shanghainese dressmaker, Mr Cheong Foo Yong, for his daughter Lucy. Cheong was born in 1933 in China and migrated to Singapore at the age of seven. When he was about sixteen, Cheong worked as an apprentice dressmaker and subsequently became a bespoke dressmaker. In 1960, he opened his shop ‘DANA Gowns Dressmaker’ at Maju Avenue. When his daughters got married, Cheong personally made all their dresses. This headpiece accompanied the dress made for Lucy, his youngest daughter. Lucy wore the dress and headpiece for her wedding at the Foochow Methodist church and reception at the Hotel New Otani. The headpiece initially held her veil in place, but the veil was removed from the headpiece for the reception.
