This prop served as a set dressing for the play, Beauty World, in its TV adaptation in 1998. The occasion was the fourth President’s Star Charity drive. The popular musical was performed at the Television Centre in Caldecott Hill, which was then under Singapore Broadcasting Centre. The event was broadcast live on Channel 5.This set prop is significant in how it is related to both the play and the place in which it was performed. Although written for the stage, its appearance on television popularized the musical, making it a household name and fetching some two million dollars for charity. That it was performed in Caldecott Broadcasting Centre, which is now lost , makes it important in the retelling of Singapore’s television history.Written by Michael Chiang and composed by Dick Lee, Beauty World was first performed on stage in 1988. The play had since found considerable success including a tour in Japan and a rerun in 1992. For the 1998 performance, well-known television actresses Sharon Au and Evelyn Tay were cast in the roles of Lulu and Ivy.
