Each silver bowl has its sides densely covered with trees, plum blossoms, and magpies, executed in a reticulated technique. A scene of magpies and early spring plum blossoms signifies impending good news and expresses a general wish for happiness and joy. The reticulated bowls are marked “LW” for Luen Wo, an important silversmith that operated from various premises in Nanking Road, Shanghai from 1865 to 1920.Such Chinese export silver items were regularly produced from the 18th to mid-20th century. Though earlier pieces tended to imitate European aesthetics and motifs, increased awareness and demand resulted in the introduction of Chinese motifs and decorations. High quality workmanship at a low labour cost added greatly to the demand and appeal for such a market.
