This finely decorated silver basket has its sides formed of eight convex lobes, with alternate openwork bamboo and dragon motifs. Bamboo exemplifies integrity, for the evergreen plant bends in the storm but does not break, and motifs of dragons amidst clouds – signify longevity and abundance. The bail handle in the form of bamboo, is twisted in a knot at the top. The silver basket is marked “WC” for Wing Chun, a retail silversmith that operated during second half of 19th century in China, Hong Kong. Such Chinese export silver items were regularly produced from the 18th to mid-20th century. Though earlier pieces tended to imitate European aesthetics and motifs, increased awareness and demand resulted in the introduction of Chinese motifs and decorations. High quality workmanship at a low labour cost added greatly to the demand and appeal for such a market.
